Racking or mounting for the solar modules, is the final piece of the system. microFIT sized systems (10 kW and under) can be mounted any place without a change in the OPA rate that you are paid for power that you produce. FIT projects (over 10kW) have different rates for rooftop verses ground mounted systems.
There are 4 main types of mounting systems:
- Pitched roof – typical home, barn, shed roof mount
- Flat roof – typical commercial or mufti-residential flat roof mount:
- ballasted
- attached to building roof supports
- Ground mount – a non-moving ground mounted structure:
- pier – structure mounted into concrete footings
- ballast – structure mounted into precast concrete ballast
- pole – structure mounted on a pole with a concrete footing
- Tracking – similar to ground mount – pole except that the section holding the panels moves with the sun:
- single axis – follows the sun from sunrise to sunset
- dual axis – in addition to following the east/west movement of the sun throughout the day, it also moves up and down to optimize the angle of the panels with the height of the sun in the sky with the changing seasons.
- Tracking can increase annual solar harvest by as much as 40%
