The City of Kingston Building Department issued a notice on June 17, 2010 requiring all rooftop solar projects require a building permit ( cost $45 ) to install solar panels. The permit requires that the applicant provide a letter from an engineer or equivalent designer confirming the roof structure is sufficient to carry the panels and any additional snow loads will be required. If additional work is required due to structural work to accommodate the installation, an additional permit will be required.
We expect that most municipalities will implement similar requirements in the near future.
